Kinky-Curly Creator
By: Yardley Messeroux

In the world of natural hair, Kinky-Curly is becoming a household name. Having been featured in publications such as Essence, OK! Magazine, Vixen, and Redbook, Kinky-Curly is making it publicly known that natural hair is most definitely a gift. But beyond all the publicity that the product line has received, it is refreshing to learn that everyday people enjoy this quality product that is specifically made for natural coils and curls.

The icing on the cake is that the creator of Kinky-Curly, Shelley Davis, is highly knowledgeable about the beauty, challenges and needs of coily and curly hair; a quality that consumers often overlook when seeking hair care products.

Not anticipating an immediate pick up when I called Kinky-Curly to schedule time to speak with Ms. Davis, Shelley unexpectedly appeared on the line. We began to talk about all things natural hair; and before we knew it, an hour had passed. Some of the best things happen spontaneously, wouldn't you agree! These are the thoughts of Shelley Davis, founder and owner of Kinky-Curly.

The Inspiration
After growing out my relaxer, I began using hair products from the beauty supply store on my natural hair. They made my curls look nice, but I soon grew tired of using products that only made my hair 'look' good, but then caused dryness and breakage with long term use. I wanted to formulate a system that was nourishing to the hair--and one that delivered results!

Behind the Brand

When I named the company back in 2003, so many people advised me to stay away from the word 'kinky'. "It sounds too 'ethnic'...no one wants to say their hair is 'kinky'...you are limiting yourself," they told me. I did some research and the only companies using the word kinky were the hair extension companies. I decided to stay true to what I believed in and stuck with the name. There are so many products out there for looser curly hair types. Thick, coarse, kinky hair is such an underserved category.

It's Official

Our products are made with natural ingredients; and not just a drop or two for the sake of the label. We use a good percentage of natural ingredients so that they actually make a difference in the health of your hair. We don't believe in clever marketing nor do we believe in using ingredients that are harmful to your body or to the planet. While some may argue that other companies only use such a small percentage of a paraben or an artificial color—what happens when you apply these products to your body everyday for years and years?

Competition in the Market

If the definition of competition as it relates to business means two or more companies vying for customers, then my competition could be anyone from the relaxer companies who don't want women to go natural, to even the extension/weave market that want women to wear someone else's hair--not their own. While I do realize there are other curly hair product lines on the market, I have read the book, The Secret, and I truly believe that what you focus on expands. I do not worry about the competition as it takes my focus off of my business and what I need to accomplish. I strive to stay true to what I believe in and my hair philosophy. The Universe is an abundant place and there is more than enough success for everyone.

Kinky-Curly Products - Customizing Usage

While Kinky-Curly products were designed for thick, coarse hair, we have discovered that our products work well on a variety of curly hair types. It is simply a matter of adjusting the amount you use and your application method. A person with a looser curl pattern may use Knot Today as a rinse out and then scrunch in a dab of Curling Custard when their hair is damp. While thicker coarser hair types should use a generous amount of Knot Today as a leave in followed by combing or finger raking a large scoop of Curling Custard on very wet hair.

Moisture Rich Products

All of our products are moisture based and formulated to solve the problem of dry hair. If you are simply looking for a moisturizer and grooming product, not specifically one for a 'wash and go' look, I would suggest our Spiral Spritz which can be used to moisturize and refresh in between wash days. Also, Curling Custard can be used to create wonderfully moisturized two strand twists, twist outs and braid outs.

Protection from Environmental Attacks

I don't believe in chemical sunscreens as an ingredient in hair products. They are chemically modified so they'll stick to your hair. The best protection against the sun is a hat or scarf when you know you will be outdoors for extended periods of time. The best protection against environmental pollution is to make sure you wash your scalp and hair on a regular basis. Your hair collects dust and debris and the skin on your scalp sheds, which needs to be washed with a gentle pH balanced shampoo.
